N-methyl-alpha-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylacrylic anhydride can be used for preparation of the important pharmaceutical compound, heparin-moxifloxacin conjugates. A recent disclosure (Helv. Chim. Acta, 79:2277-2288 (1996)) teaches the use of a lithium halide-catalyzed reaction of N-methyl-alpha-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylacrylic anhydride with dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate to prepare N-methyl-alpha-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylacrylamide.
One prior art method involves the use of expensive, reagent grade lithium halides in the preparation of N-methyl-alpha-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylacrylic anhydride (Houben-Weyl, Volume H.14, 1981, page 531). A second method (U.S. Pat. No. 4,466,859) requires the use of sodium hydride to prepare the alpha-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylacrylic anhydride starting material.
There has been a long felt need in the art for a process for the preparation of N-methyl-alpha-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylacrylic anhydride. Moreover, it is desirable that any such process involve the use of readily available starting materials, be easy to perform, and have a minimal number of
